Carotid Artery Intervention Preceptorship

Curriculum

The basis of the curriculum is to provide interventionalists a continuum of CME-accredited courses and tools designed to meet the needs of physicians seeking didactic and procedural training in interventional strategies and endovascular procedures. In order to provide these experiences, course participants must have sufficient background knowledge, skills, and experience to participate in the course.

The formal program curriculum has been designed to meet the needs for education, credentialing, clinical experience, and patient care in order to provide the most comprehensive training program available. Courseware includes a compendium of resource materials including interactive case studies and intensive hands-on training in catheter-based technology taught by leading endovascular specialists. Continuing Medical Education credit is offered on many of the components within the curriculum.

Module One - Self training - A review of interactive case studies focusing on of carotid arterial interventions designed to provide procedural information on the management and treatment of carotid artery disease.

Module Two - Procedural training - Hands-on training with the course director and other instructors includes the following specific endovascular skills: diagnostic angiography, angioplasty and stenting techniques (carotid/subclavian). Actual case experience during this module will be at the sole discretion of the course director and patient availability.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this training program, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss specific interventional options for the management of carotid disease.
  • Explain diagnostic and therapeutic carotid artery procedures.
  • Discuss possible complications of carotid artery procedures.
  • Perform clinical procedures that can directly contribute to credentialing requirements for carotid arterial stenting.
